The short answer

Google Shopping is available in South Africa. You upload your products to Google Merchant Center with prices in rand, and they can then appear for free in Google Search, Images, Lens, YouTube and the Shopping tab. To get more visibility you link Merchant Center to Google Ads and run Shopping ads, which you pay for per click.

Is Google Shopping available in South Africa?

Yes. Google's list of supported countries and currencies includes South Africa with the South African rand (ZAR), and marks it as a country where "the Shopping tab is available to users". That means a store in Durban, Pretoria or Cape Town can list products in rand and show them to South African shoppers, both for free and through paid ads.

One caveat. In September 2025, MyBroadband reported that many South African users no longer saw the Shopping tab by default, although it could still be reached and product results still showed on the main results page. Google did not explain the change at the time. Product listings themselves were not switched off, so this affects where shoppers see your products, not whether you can list them. Search for one of your own products on google.co.za to see the current layout.

Free listings vs Shopping ads: what is the difference?

Free listings cost nothing but give you no control over when you show; Shopping ads cost per click but let you choose budgets, products and bids. Both run from the same Merchant Center product data, so you set up once and can use either or both.

Google's free listings help page says new Merchant Center accounts are opted in to free listings by default, and that being eligible "doesn't guarantee" your products will be shown. Shopping ads, per Google's Shopping ads guide, use your product data rather than keywords to match searches, and a Shopping ad and a normal text ad from the same store can show on the same results page.

How Google Shopping works for a South African store Your website's products go into a product feed, the feed goes into Google Merchant Center, and from there products can show for free as free listings, or as paid Shopping ads once Merchant Center is linked to Google Ads. 1. Your online store product pages with prices in rand 2. Google Merchant Center product feed: ID, title, image, price 3a. Free listings no cost, on by default Google picks when to show you 3b. Shopping ads linked to Google Ads you set the budget, pay per click
One product feed in Merchant Center powers both free listings and paid Shopping ads.

How do you get your products on Google Shopping?

Create a Merchant Center account, add your store details and policies, upload a clean product feed in rand, then decide whether to add Shopping ads. For a typical South African store on Shopify or WooCommerce, these are the steps:

  1. Create a Google Merchant Center account and verify and claim your website, so Google knows the store is yours.
  2. Add your business details, return policy and shipping. Google recommends adding a return policy, because it can show next to your products. Shipping settings are compulsory in a list of countries such as the UK and US; South Africa is not on that list, but Google still recommends them, and shoppers in Polokwane or George want to know delivery costs before they click.
  3. Upload your products. Use your platform's Google integration or a feed file. Google's product data specification marks attributes such as ID, title and image link as required: without them, a product "won't be able to serve in ads and free listings".
  4. Match the feed to your website exactly. Price in rand, stock status and product name on the feed must agree with the product page. Mismatches are a common reason for disapproved products.
  5. Check free listings are on in Merchant Center, then fix any products flagged under issues or diagnostics.
  6. Link Merchant Center to Google Ads when you are ready to pay for extra visibility, and set up purchase conversion tracking with order values first. Without it, Google cannot tell which products make money.

What is the "ZA South African" label on Google?

It is a marker Google adds to some South African platforms in search results, because the Competition Commission required it. The Commission's Online Intermediation Platforms Market Inquiry, published in July 2023, found that Google's own Shopping and travel units distort competition. Its remedies told Google to:

  • add an SA flag identifier and an SA platform search filter, so shoppers can spot and support local platforms;
  • provide R180 million in advertising credits for small platforms, with free training on running campaigns;
  • provide a further R150 million in training, product support and other measures for SME and black-owned online firms.

Google started showing the "ZA South African" marker in 2024. According to a Google spokesperson quoted by TechCentral, it is for "firms offering online intermediation platform services in travel and e-commerce that are headquartered in South Africa and owned or controlled by a South African citizen". In other words, it is aimed at marketplaces and platforms, so a single-brand store may not qualify. Google said platforms it had not identified would be able to apply. We could not find public details on how the R180 million in ad credits is being allocated, so do not plan a budget around it.

What does Google Shopping cost in South Africa?

Free listings cost nothing. Shopping ads have no fixed price: you set a budget and pay per click, and what a click costs depends on your products and your competitors. Google bills Shopping campaigns on cost per click, charging only when someone clicks through to your product page.

You control the total. A store budgeting R10,000 a month on Shopping ads would set an average daily budget of about R329, because Google plans monthly spend at 30.4 times the daily budget. Be wary of articles promising specific rand-per-click figures or returns for South African Shopping campaigns: we have not seen a published source for them, and your margins matter more than any average. What are the most common Google Shopping mistakes?

Most problems come from the feed and the tracking, not the ads themselves. These are the ones to check first:

  • Prices that do not match the website, for example after a sale ends but the feed still shows the old rand price.
  • Weak product titles. "Premium Kettle" tells Google far less than "1.7L Stainless Steel Electric Kettle, Cream". Shopping ads match on your product data, so the title does the job keywords do in Search.
  • No purchase tracking, or tracking without order values. Google then optimises for clicks instead of sales. If this sounds familiar, our Google Analytics and tracking setup service fixes it.
  • Jumping straight to Performance Max with no sales history, then not knowing where the budget went.
  • Ignoring free listings, even though they cost nothing and use the same feed.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google Shopping available in South Africa?

Yes. Google lists South Africa as a supported Merchant Center country, with prices in South African rand, for both Shopping ads and free listings. How product results are laid out for South African searchers has changed over time, so check google.co.za for your own products.

Are Google Shopping listings free?

Partly. Free listings let your products appear across Google at no cost, and new Merchant Center accounts are opted in by default. Shopping ads, which give you more visibility and control, are paid per click through Google Ads.

How much do Google Shopping ads cost in South Africa?

There is no fixed price. You set a daily budget and pay per click, and the cost of a click depends on your products and competition. For example, a R10,000 monthly budget means a daily budget of about R329.

Do I need Performance Max to run Shopping ads?

No. Standard Shopping campaigns still exist and give you more control over products, bids and search terms. Performance Max can work well, but it suits stores that already have reliable purchase tracking and sales data.

Can my online store get the "ZA South African" label?

Possibly, but it is aimed at platforms. Google said the marker is for travel and e-commerce platforms headquartered in South Africa and owned or controlled by a South African citizen, and that eligible platforms it had not identified could apply.

The take-away

Google Shopping is one of the few places a South African online store can be seen for free, and the same product feed then powers paid Shopping ads when you are ready to grow. Get Merchant Center right first, with an accurate rand feed and purchase tracking, and the paid side becomes far easier to make profitable.
